At the Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital in Győr, if somebody wants to see the body of a relative or family member before it is taken away from the hospital, they have to pay 5,500 forints to see it – reports Úgy Tudjuk. Dr. László Jávor, the general director of the hospital, confirmed to the newspaper that this fee payment obligation has indeed been in effect since April 1st, 2019.
According to the hospital, the organization of viewing the dead body “does not belong to the scope of publicly funded activities according to the relevant legislation”, so it is not included in the job description of the pathologists. So this means extra work for them. When asked whether this collection of money is compatible with medical ethics, Jávor replied that “judgment of this question does not belong to the scope of medical ethics”.
Currently, there is no mandatory central regulation, local institutions can decide for themselves whether or not to ask for money for this. Referring to the newspaper’s reports, he writes that the National Hospital General Directorate (OKFŐ) does not consider this practice to be ethical and would like to establish a uniform practice on the issue.
